I listened to a radio broadcast of Amos and Andy, a comedy
show. The Amos and Andy episode that I heard was initially broadcasted on October
13, 1944. The audience intended for this broadcast was everyone because the
show was a comedy.
My experience listening to the show brought back memories of
how we receive entertainment. It was not so different than entertainment like TV
or reading. Listening to a broadcast is like reading a book, and you paint the
scenes in your mind as you would vision on a TV set.
The content of this program fits the radio medium because
the narrator helps to paint a picture of the scene by telling you where they were
and what they were doing at the time.
Radios also helped the world say entertained. An advantage of radio entertainment is that it opens your mind to imagine what is happening from the scenes. A disadvantage is that you can’t see the people that are talking. During the time of the broadcast, things were different. If TVs were used, people would be able to see faces. Given the racism during the show, a live showing would probably be a disadvantage. Listening to people talk was an advantage for radio entertainment; people can’t hear racism.
