Edison's Talking Doll, a child's toy with a phonograph inside. The toy was invented in 1890. THis image is a photomechanical reproduction from 1972, showing detail of the phonograph inside the doll.
I'm not sure what collection this falls under; I simply searched for something I remembered from a previous visit to the Library of Congress website. I find the life and history of Thomas Edison fascinating. according. despite years of attempting to market such a toy, the Edison doll was a complete failure. There are extremely few still in existence.
