This is a picture of the first newspaper, "The Stars and Stripes", for servicemen by servicemen. This edition was found in Paris, France in February 1918.

This was the first edition of the Stars and Stripes newspaper that was created for U.S. troops on the front lines. It was meant to be a place for information from around the front lines and back home to the deployed troops. This wasn't the actual first newspaper of the Stars and Stripes but was the beginning of what is now the Stars and Stripes. The first paper was created by union soldiers that had captured a town with a printing press in it. They created a one page newspaper about their conquests. 

A newspaper by troops for troops is a fascinating piece of communication when you think about how those troops felt, what they were thinking and how they coped with the day to day. A paper that understood them and allowed for their voices to be heard was and is a great way to make the everyday rigors of military life in the battlefield better. I chose this as it is interesting how when we were in trenches and fighting tooth and nail in WWI that a single commander and a handful of troops made a paper that now serves thousands and has also provided the U.S. with great publishers and writers.

This was found in the Library of Congress Collection: Stars and Stripes: The American Soldiers' Newspaper of World War I, 1918 to 1919. What I'd like to learn from this collection is what authors and influential people today came from this publication.
