This is a photo of modern graffiti in EL-Ghabat, near Egypt It is out of respect to an ancient tradition of depicting the pilgrimage of oneself or family members. Modern tradition of making a pilgrimage still exists in some areas.

Carved graffiti. This depicts a large cargo boat. It is found on the pyramid Ku1, in El-Kurru, in the Nile Valley. Most pyramid graffiti was of boats. Although not for certain, it is thought that it is representative of a pilgrimage, similar to the previous image. It is thought to be from around 325BCE.

The link above is not one particular image. It is a slide show of photos and videos depicting various methods of cave graffiti in what is known as the Chauvet caves. in particlar, I was interested in the slide 'blowing pigment'. in this image, there is a red pigmented handprint on a cave wall. The pigment was spit into the hand before application. What I find curious is the odd shape and disfigured look of the hand. the thumb is oddly positioned and shaped. all the other fingers are spread, but the thumb is held tight to the index finger. I'd love to know why.
